Responsibilities

The pharmacy manager performs professional & clinical functions generally associated with the practice of pharmacy in the institutional setting.  Acts administratively in specific service lines or in the absence of the Director.  Directs technical and clerical pharmacy personnel.  Assists in implementation of quality control measures in order to identify and rectify problems.

 

  • Performs all dispensing related functions. These include but are not limited to: entering medication orders into the computer generated patient profile, preparing, labeling, and dispensing individual medications in accordance with doctor's orders, compounding oral and injectable pharmaceutical preparations using proper aseptic technique, and filling and checking medication orders to insure accuracy prior to delivery to the patient care unit.
  • Processes Floor Stock and Controlled Substances requests.
  • Contacts and confers with physicians regarding any questions or irregularities regarding medication orders. Documents all recommendations and corrective actions taken.
  • Performs antibiotic stewardship activities by reviewing the patient's medical record, pertinent culture and sensitivity information as well as laboratory data, and makes therapeutic recommendations based upon these findings.
  • Participates in clinical activities, which include but are not limited to: attending Team Conferences, participating in patient related rounds, conducting medication management teaching, mentoring pharmacy students, processing drug information inquiries and consulting patients and family members on discharge medications.
  • Participates in staff, supervisory and special meetings of committees as may be required.
  • Keeps informed on developments and trends inside and outside the organization which relate to assigned functions. Serves as a resource to other departments for information needed. Participates in and contributes to outside professional activities or other projects.
  • Consults with physician and nursing staff concerning availability, form, side effects and incompatibilities of currently available drugs.
  • Maintains department operations in the absence of the Director. Serves a resource and mentor to other staff members and assists in development and implementation of department policies and procedures, staff orientation and competency development.
  • Serves as the pharmacy representative for the specific program / care area where they provide oversight.
  • With the Director, organizes daily operational duties of the department. Monitors and adjusts work assignments of pharmacy personnel.  May direct clerical and support personnel.
  • Participates in staff and special committee meetings as required. Represents the Director in his/her absence.
  • Serves as the pharmacy representative at meetings specific to the program / care area where they provide oversight. This will include Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee, Medical Executive Committee, and Governing Board.
  • Ensures success of department operations through building employee engagement, effective talent assessment, continual learning and development, cross-training and succession planning.
  • Identifies and initiates own professional growth through continued learning, self-study and involvement in professional activities and organizations.
  • Keeps informed on developments and trends inside and outside of the organization which relate to assigned functions. Serves as an informational resource to other departments.  Participates in and contributes to outside professional activities or other projects.
  • With the Director, assumes responsibility for the supervision of pharmacy students when applicable.
  • Floating between critical illness recovery hospital and inpatient rehab hospital.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current state licensure as a Pharmacist required.
  • Two or more years of experience as a Pharmacist required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One or more years of experience in hospital pharmacy preferred.
  • One or more years of experience in management preferred.
