Location: SSH Milwaukee West Allis and Milwaukee St. Francis locations

Schedule: Full Time

Responsibilities

Functions as part of the hemodialysis team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for assigned patients under the supervision of the Registered Nurses in accordance with policy and procedure, and training and in compliance with regulations set forth by the corporation, state, and federal agencies.

  • Conduct all tasks necessary for preparation for dialysis treatment and document where appropriate.
  • Oversees the preparation of the delivery system, dialysate bath, and dialyzer and confirms that all
    mandatory alarm tests on the dialyzer and equipment are performed.
  • Responsible for Tablo device set-up including entering provider dialysis prescription into Tablo.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency and report any unusual findings to Hemodialysis RN (HD RN).
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and report any difficulties in cannulation or unusual findings to HD RN as delegated or as allowed by state law. Report any unusual findings to HD RN (excludes central lines).
  • Obtain and document necessary pre, intra, and post treatment vital signs, assessment, treatment values, and weight per policy in the medical record. Reports unusual findings to HD RN.
  • Observe patient, and conduct machine safety checks according to facility policy. Report any change or unusual findings to the HD RN.
  • Report any significant information and/or change in patient condition directly to the HD RN.
  • Monitor patients' response to dialysis therapy and report any unusual findings to HD RN. Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide intervention as prescribed by physician order or as directed by the HD RN. Document interventions and patients' response to interventions.
  • Evaluate patients' vascular access during treatment including arterial and venous monitoring pressures, provide appropriate intervention as needed, document and report any unusual findings to the HD RN.
  • Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion; perform all relevant functions necessary for the discontinuation of treatment
  • Discontinue dialysis treatment according to established procedures
  • Evaluate patient prior to termination of venous access - standing & sitting blood pressure.
  • Oversees disassembly and disinfection of dialysis equipment. Monitors and ensures dialysis machines are properly maintained.
  • Obtain Hemostasis and apply appropriate dressings as required.
  • Evaluate the patient for prior to completing hemodialysis session and report any unusual findings to HD RN.
  • Ensure appropriate safety alarms are reviewed and managed according to policy.
  • Performs surveillance and testing of dialysis water treatment equipment and dialysis water (such as chlorine, hardness, conductivity, water cultures) to ensure that these machines are operating within the parameters set in the policy and procedure. Complies with required logs, testing and cultures to comply with policy and procedure and regulatory standards.
  • Complies with all clinical, infection control and on-site dialysis program policies and procedures.
  • Obtain all prescribed laboratory testing, prepare, and label specimens for collection.
  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machine surface, chair, equipment, and surrounding area between treatments according to facility policy. Perform all required dialysis machine testing and maintenance according to policy.
  • Ensure that all blood spills are immediately cleaned with appropriate disinfectant according to facility policy.
  • Prepare, organize, and efficiently utilize supplies and equipment to prevent waste and maintain a clean, safe environment of care.
  • Communicates emotional, medical, psychosocial, and nutritional concerns to the registered nurse or HD RN.
  • Displays a “customer service” attitude toward patients, visitors, and other staff members at all times.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. and at least 6 months’ experience as hemodialysis technician required
  • CCHT required
  • Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS) approved state and/or national certification required
  • Licensure, education and training per state requirements
  • Meets necessary requirements of Ishihara's Color Blindness Test
  • BLS required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or related facility preferred
