Overview

The Corporate Energy Manager manages the organization’s efforts to promote responsible use of resources by leveraging technology, exploiting internal and external subject matter expertise, and continuously learning from healthcare industry design advancements.  The desired goal of these efforts is a reduced environmental impact by the organization along with reduced operating costs by optimizing energy consumption.  The individual works with peers in Corporate Operations and others to design, build, implement, and optimize use of technology-based systems that provide real-time tracking of physical plant infrastructure operation.  The individual then analyzes data gathered from these systems to implement improvements to the organization’s energy management program.

The Corporate Energy Manager, Plant Operations position involves frequent travel.  Purposes of this travel includes but is not limited to:

  • Conduct site-based physical plant infrastructure condition assessment and make recommendations for improvements focused upon optimization of performance leading to energy cost reduction;
  • Collaborate with Select Medical Design/Construction Team on new construction and infrastructure renewal to optimize design efficiency, establish appropriate sequences of operation, and ensure as-built operation matches or exceeds design specifications;
  • Intervene when Building Automation Systems (BAS) indicate inefficient or improper operation of critical building infrastructure systems and collaborate with site-based Directors of Plant Operations (DPO) to correct or improve performance.

Responsibilities

While the Energy Manager position carries many possible responsibilities, Select Medical will position the Corporate Energy Manager for success by establishing a prioritized near- to moderate-term set of goals:

  • Years 1-3: Recognizing that an efficient and effective BAS is an essential foundation of any Energy Management Program, Select Medical expects the Corporate Energy Manager to focus on development of a centralized, enterprise-wide, networked BAS based upon the Johnson Controls Incorporated (JCI) “Metasys” Technology.  This system to be created in collaboration with Select Medical Information Technologies (IT) and to be housed at Select Medical’s corporate headquarters in Mechanicsburg, PA, with guidance from Select Medical IT;
  • Years 1-3: Establishing an operational budget for energy management initiatives is essential to ensuring the Energy Management Program has financial infrastructure to continue, the Corporate Energy Manager will establish budgeting for external Energy Modeling data management services.  Select Medical has established partnerships with MEP Engineering Consulting Firms whose expertise can be leveraged to provide the Corporate Energy Manager with data sources that will enable the Energy Manager to analyze and manage the Program;
    • Collaborate with external energy modeling consultants to establish budget and service agreement for energy modeling data management
  • Years 1-3: Site-based training:  The Corporate Energy Manager will leverage the American Hospital Association’s (AHA) American Society for Health Care Engineering (ASHE™) Energy University™ to establish basic awareness-level training for site-based Directors of Plant Operations, followed by technician-level training for Plant Operations Mechanics.
  • Other:
    • Analyze energy modeling data and develop Return on Investment (ROI) projections on proposed new projects;
    • Collaborate with corporate project management teams to develop energy management strategies on new construction and infrastructure renovations;
    • Develop and maintain strong relationships with both internal and external engineering, construction, and procurement stakeholders;
    • Perform building walk-throughs to identify energy conservation opportunities (architectural, mechanical, electrical, water management/plumbing, etc.);
    • Self-direct priorities across the enterprise and keep team-mates within Corporate Operations Team apprised of priorities;
    • Analyze pricing and rate structures on supply side energy sources and advise organization on best energy purchase plans;
    • Collaborate with and analyze proposals and submittals by external vendors to recommend best choices internally;
    • Ability and willingness to travel frequently overnight during weeknights via both airline and car;
    • Current driver license with appropriate driving record that would not prevent driving rental vehicles on company business.
    • Daily communication with various site-based Directors of Plant Operations/Safety Officers to provide support for critical building infrastructure assessments
    • Advanced knowledge of healthcare facility building infrastructure systems (e.g., Heating/Ventilation/Air-Conditioning, Steam, Hot/Cold Water Production, Domestic and Fire Suppression Water Systems, Electrical Distribution Systems, Emergency Power Systems, Building Envelope, Medical Gas Systems, etc.)  NOTE:  It is acknowledged that few individuals have extensive knowledge and/or hands-on experience with all critical building infrastructure.  Goal of this criterion is to possess strong general knowledge with ability to identify operational anomalies and establish/maintain appropriate preventive maintenance on critical systems using both external professional contractors
    • Manage personal travel arrangements, including proper use of corporate funds and accurate/timely documentation and reporting of business expenses as instructed

Qualifications

  • Four year degree in mechanical or electrical engineering from an ABET-accredited university required;
